 Kiss
Ok, so we replied to the Mother and ducklings add back in Sept. Of course they were already placed, as you know if you read the reply to the add. But here is the thing: They had a pair, a mother and her duckling, who needed to be adopted. They sent us pics and started the adoption process. Sounds easy, yeh? Well here is the kicker... The SC muscovy rescue organization;aka the Ruby's are in , yes, you guessed it, South Carolina! And where do we live? Central California! All the way across the entire country! And for anyone who has not delt with CA Gov't, you should know that it can be like dealing with another country all together!
So for almost 2 months, The Ruby's doggedly delt with all people concerned, Gov't agencies, Vets, Airlines, etc. They kept in constant contact to update us each step of the way! They even sent pics so that we could "see" our new ducks! They were very kind. They even tried to get a test done, mistakenly told we needed by CA Gov't, But would have required all the ducks blood! Thank goodness it was not needed after all!
So to make a long story short, Mr Ruby went to the airport 2 hours early, had to purchase a very expensive pet kennel/carrier, set up the ducks in the carrier with food and water and bedding, resulting in a 24lb "pet package" to be flown to us, here in CA. The rescue organization paid to ship them to us, pet air freight! I have nightmares about what it must have cost them! They had miles of paperwork, and the airline didn't loose them, just misplaced them , but it was at the Fresno airport so that was not a real problem!
They arrived happy, healthy, and chirrpy. They hand fed, at least the little one, Carrie did, and her mom was more reserved, but still very friendly. They are in the back yard in a pen doing their ducky thing right now, Eating lettuce, spooning up water with the bills, bathing in the filled motar tub...just hanging out, looking for bugs.

So why tell you all of this? I think that it is important to help the Ruby's find good homes for their 'friends.' These are ducks that are rescued because their lives are in danger! They need good, safe homes to live out their lives!(They cannot be used in any way for food, other than collecting their eggs!) They are pets, and really sweet ones at that. We were not charged for these ducks in any way, we were even thanked, if you can believe it, for giving them a happy, safe home.
Let's recap: the Ruby's worked for almost 2 months, spent loads of resources, and provided us with 2 of the most wonderful, sweetest creatures for our family to love and care for; and they thanked us! They are amazing people!
So, if you, or anyone you know, needs some amazing pets, these wonderful people have them just waiting for you to adopt! Due to our limited finacial resources at the moment, we are unable to donate to this wonderful cause, but please be assured that we will do anything to help them and help their other wonderful ducks find loving homes to live out their lives. ...And I think that muscovy ducks are beautiful!
Sincerely

That's a great story.  Something that I've not thought about until this very moment is a thing that pet rescue people do where they secure rides through volunteers to transport animals to new families or no kill shelters, etc.  Maybe in the future something like that could be an option!  I know there are groups for rescue transports on Yahoo.

I totally agree with you concerning the Ruby's.  I adopted 7 ducklings from them a few months back.  These were the prettiest, calmist, healthiest ducklings I had ever seen.  It was and is so obvious that they were loved and well cared for.  I was willing to drive to pick them up, but Mr. Ruby insisted on delivering them to me, along with a 50 lb bag of feed.  Yes, I am in SC, where they are located, but it was still a 3 hour drive for him.  I donated as much to the rescue as I was able.  I only wish it had been much more.  I will adopt from them, again!!!!!

If you are able to adopt, please let them know!  I am sure they could use a few donations, also.

anmial mad, Have you contacted the RSPCA or posted on any chat forums in the UK? Muscovies are so amazing, someone in the area must have some. I seem to remember that I saw a blog a few months back about a farm in Sommerset that had muscovies and geese, raised organically for food, but they had live ones, too. I will see if I can find them, but it may take a while, as when I do research on a subject I read about a thousand sites over about a month, so there is a lot of history to search through! I will see what I can find.

Animal mad, you have got to go on that site I sent you! Bird trader.co.uk ! They have tons of muscovies! They even had one that was free to good home! Loads of colors and ages! All over the UK! you should be able to find what you are looking for! I only looked at 4 of the 27 pages and I found about 40 different muscovies! lavender, white, pied, buff and ducklings to mature drakes! Now I wish I lived in the UK! Some of the pics are really pretty birds!
