Hello All, and Thank you, Cathy, for allowing me to come on board.
I am not only new to ducks, but also to using a forum.  So, please excuse my baby steps. Smiley I've truly appreciate "listening in" on all your exchanges and will try to ask all my questions in the proper  places.
My name is Sara, and we live on 38 acres in Southeastern, Oklahoma, near Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Mostly pasture, with a creek running through it.  We retired here from MN 5 years ago, and fell in love with this area, with the beautiful Ozark mountains in my front and back yard views.  We are glad to be where there is also milder winters, and to our pleasant surprise,  around our place we see about 12 mosquito a year, even with this wet year when we've seem to have rain everyday. If you haven’t heard, the Mosquito is the State Bird of MN! Living with my husband and I, is my Father, 83,  our two sons in their twenties, 3 dogs, 7 cats, 34 goats, (by Spring double that amount) and 20 Moscovy.
Actually, we fell into raising meat goats a few years back and I just adore them. This past summer with all the wet, our fly problem was to the point that if my barn wasn’t as securely anchored as it is, it would have been hovering inches above the ground. And the noise was getting close to ear drum damaging.  The local OSU Extention officer suggested Moscovy Ducks.  I did a little research, and we purchased 20, 5 to 7 weeks old babies.
They  are flying around the place now, and like to go out with the goats, and it’s funny to watch them run toward the barn when our Livestock dogs bark a warning.  I think they think they are goats.  Is that normal? We let them free range during the day, (and that means they like to nestle among the goats in the barn in mid-day… and at night they have a  40 x 8 wire enclosed pen.
But, I have many questions, and there is so little information out there about these wonderful birds, and I came across this  Forum.  I will try to contain myself, and hold those questions for later. Thanks again for being “Out There”.  Sara

Hi Sara & welcome to the forum.

I've never noticed my birds hanging out with any of the other critters but it could very well be they have a symbiotic relationship of sorts with the goats if the goats are stirring up insects and such for them to eat.  They might have just learned that they have better luck foraging when they're following the goats around.  I dunno.  Just speculation on my part!

I love that area of the world, too.  Except for the humidity, I LOVE the Ozarks & go every summer down to NW Arkansas to visit family.  I can see why you fell in love!

The information I have provided in this message is based on my own personal experiences, the experiences of others who have shared their experiences and knowledge with me, and a dash of opinion thrown in for extra flavor.  Your mileage may vary! Shocked)

Cheesy Hi Sara, sorry I'm so late in welcoming you, It's been quite a year with my 85 yr. old Mom, but it sounds like I don't have to tell you how it is. I could close my eyes & see the beauty of where you're fortunate enough to retire. I live in south FL & have for more than 30 yrs. I'm kind of forced into staying now that my parents need me on a daily basis. I was also forced into retirement due to my health & was lucky enough to have thre grown sons that are happy to have their Mom with them. Now as far as their wives....I'm not real sure.....LOL....but that's another story! I too, was lucky enough to move in with my oldest son that has lived on a lake for the past 15 yrs. I quickly fell in love with the Muscovy's & have adopted about 8 of them. They pretty much stay in my yard but forage around the lake too. Like you, I'm very new to this & have learned so much here & Cathy is wonderful with her knowledge & help. I did purchase the book Storey's Quide to Raising ducks & while it's about most all breeds of ducks, he seems to have a fondness for the Muscovy & has an entire chapter on them that is quite good. I'm learning just like you, by watching & watching & enjoying them! Mine are quite the entertainment around here & I bring my parents over to sit on the porch & enjoy them with me. It's funny how they know who to trust. They'll eat out of my Dad's hand as soon as they see him. Well, I'm going off on a "novel" again,I ususally do when I get talking about my "Babies"! I'm having some issues with a new male that flew in & my old Crazy Boy ( so named) just flattens himself out behind me when he sees him coming! It's one of those things that's funny ...but not! I'd love to hear more about your'sanytime. So I'll look for you here or feel free to write me whenever you'd like. Nice to meet you & oh the mosquito's! I hear ya!
