Ducklings require a higher protein than adults do. I typically would start mine out on a gamebird starter (28%) and then switch about two weeks in to a custom ration based around the ones found in Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks. However, I no longer have the numbers to justify a custom ration so I simply switch to a chick starter (18%). Not ideal, but when it comes down to having to order 500# of custom or being able to buy 50# of starter I have to err on the side of ease of handling and feed freshness - while I know that starters aren't actually all that fresh, by the time I could use 500# of starter it would be far older and therefore the nutrients would be diminished.

Feeding the ducklings and the mom the same chick starter ( flcok raiser) has always worked out for me. I forget what % it is but as long as my mama has corn and foraging abilities they have always been fine.
